Awkward Beasts
This porcelain series was developed in two stages in Kecskemét, starting in a workshop with Ilona Romule. There, I worked with plaster molds using both slip casting and press molding. I combined a main form with smaller elements, assembling these parts in varied ways to explore form, rhythm, and expression.
The process was mainly formal, testing the limits of these combinations.
A year later, I returned for a residency to continue working with the same molds,
as well as new and older ones from previous sculptures — heads, hands, and fragments. The focus shifted to assembling forms that vary in origin, time, and character. Often, slip-cast and press-molded elements merge in a single object.
The resulting figures are less resolved, sometimes awkward, a bit off, or even uncomfortable — but also unexpectedly tender.
The works are made of porcelain and fired in a gas-reduction atmosphere. Celadon glazes serve as a base, occasionally interrupted by small areas of other glazes. These accents break the smooth, almost perfect surface, introducing imbalance and subtle tension.
The series reflects on the diversity of life and how we project emotion onto forms that are not quite human. Even minimal or misplaced features can trigger empathy. I am drawn to this unstable space — where something feels slightly wrong, excessive, or absurd, yet still evokes recognition, care, or attachment.
